I have lived on a hobby farm my entire adult life with room for horses, chickens, gardens and pets. I’ve never felt equal to crop farmers, truck farmers, beef and dairy farmers or any other farmers that get up at 4:00 AM and go to bed right after supper. I’d like to thank them for their service! Real farming is really hard work and fraught with the vagaries of weather, market conditions and politics.

For those desirous of a more rural lifestyle but not a full time job, 5 to 20 acres is more than enough to keep you as busy as you’d like to be. Many of my clients that are transitioning from the suburbs to the countryside have a dream of raising chickens, goats or horses, growing their own fruits and vegetables and putting food by every fall for the winter. Even with little or no experience the learning curve is fast as what works and what doesn’t is self evident.

If a hobby farm is on your wish list, Virginia’s Piedmont is the place to be: four seasons, good soils, breathtaking countryside and proximity to towns like Charlottesville as needed. Have a look at some of these current offerings and give us a call to discuss your next move.
